Hands off! I don't wanna see my pi'chas all over the 'net.
September_October
(Sep 1, 2009)
I don't take many pics of my hair these days, so I'm combining the months of September and October. No need to have an album with 3-4 pics, right?

My locs are doing well. I do very little to them and we're happy. I shampoo every 2 weeks, rinse at will, re-twist once a month, and spritz with a mix of water, castor oil, and glycerin about once a week. Life.Is.Good.

August
(Aug 1, 2009)
Now that I don't do anything much to my hair, it's a challenge to remember to take pics. My bad.

My locs have budded and have that firm, spongy feel to them, especially in the back. Wetting my hair on the regular has really sped up the process. I barely have separate after a rinse now. Under advise from loc gurus NaturalKinks and Creativity, I've moved to re-twisting every 4 weeks for these beginning stages to help "shape" my locs. I want them cylindrical vs flat.

July
(Jul 1, 2009)
So far, so good. I've combined 2 of my twists so I now have a total of 115. Right now I have the fuzzies, which was to be expected. I have washed and rinsed my hair multiple times and of course, there is no unraveling. The loc'ing life is good!

June
(Jun 1, 2009)
Greetings, All! Once again, I want to thank you so much for your prayers, thoughts and wonderful comments. They have really helped to keep my spirits up. Things are going swimmingly well. I have been promoted from a walker to a cane. (Oooh, I'll have to post a pic.)

So, I decided the last set of twists I had were too big so I separated them into smaller twists. I've finally gotten them to the size I want and THINK I'm ready to loc. My scalp sure needs a wash, but I've been putting it off b/c I didn't want the twists to dry and begin meshing until I'm absolutely sure I am ready. However, I've found as I've taken some twists down to re-twist or make smaller, there have been no tangles. That just proves that if I did my hair more often, I wouldn't have to deal with the horrid detangling sessions. Unfortunately, I don't want to do my hair more often.

I'm still scared to wash, though 'cause once I do, there's no turning back. I refuse to go through a 3-day detangling session. This is it.

Why am I locing?

I got tired of the 3-day long detangling sessions and I wasn't willing to do my hair more often to avoid them. It was either loc or cut. I've already had short hair, so now it's time to try locing. A fan of low-manipulation styling (I've kept twists in as long at 3 mos, with washing of course), locs are just perfect.

Important things I have learned in my loc research:

* Prolonged rinsing will combat build-up and help with pliability.
* Twist every 6 weeks. (Yay, I like this one!)
* Never sleep on wet hair and use a micro-fiber towel. (My hair holds water and this will help keep them fresh.)
* Use hot oil treatments to condition locs.
* Brushing mature locs is good for added sheen, stimulating the scalp, fluffiness, and eliminating buildup.
* Try aloe vera juice in a spritz. Makes the locs moist and soft.

May
(May 1, 2009)
Greetings, All! Thank you soooo much for the prayers, thoughts, and well-wishes. You guys are awesome! I am happy to report that I am doing well. Physical therapy has me feeling stronger with each passing week and the pain is down to a dull ache to none at all, depending on what I'm doing.

As for my hair, no loc'ing at this time because I didn't like the way they fell. My next set of twists should look better and if I like them, I'll let them loc.

April - The Accident
(Apr 1, 2009)
So sorry for the delay in updating, but I was in a pretty serious car accident at the beginning of April. See, what had happened wuz...

One Saturday night in early April, I went in search of a former student of mine. She was a handful in 2nd grade and she’s times 10 (handful x 10) at age 16. I keep in contact with her on MySpace and it was there that I found out she’d run away from home. I arranged to meet her the following day, but she wasn’t to be found when I arrived. Concerned she was caught up, I snooped around on MySpace and found out she was attending a party where illegal activity was going on. Torn about what to do, after weighing my options I decided to go get her. By the time I arrived, the police had broken the party up and the teens had scattered. As I was leaving the hotel parking lot, I was hit on the driver’s side. The impact from the Suburban knocked me unconscious (concussion), broke my femur, and totaled my vehicle. It is strictly GOD’s will that I am alive and I thank HIM for sparing my life.

When I got out of the hospital, I went to look at my car and I wondered at where I had been sitting. The car was just that bad. My mama just cried and cried. It is a miracle that my injuries weren’t more serious. Yes, a broken femur was serious enough to warrant a titanium rod and screws and 15 staples in my thigh, but miraculously there were no cuts & bruises and only a slight scrape over my left eye. HIS angels protected HIS child. I’m often asked if I am bitter at the wayward teen and my response is a resounding NO. She didn’t ask me to nose around MySpace looking for her whereabouts. I just pray that her silly sixteen-year-old self comes around and returns home to her family and that GOD watches over her as HE watches over me.

GOD sparing my life reassures me I have a place and purpose on this earth and I am determined to carry is out in its entirety. All praises to HIM.

March
(Mar 1, 2009)
Nothing going on with my hair at all. I'm still in protective styles in an attempt to baby my ends. I even tried baggying for the first time. I'm sure it'll take some time before knowing whether or not it was helpful. If I see no split ends for a while, it's a success.

February
Nothing much going on in February. I'm still on NP's protective style challenge, although I unleashed the 'fro for a few days. My ends were horrible, so I trimmed an inch. They feel much better now.
