- I suffered a major setback in late 2010. This is the fallout (literally) and aftermath as I continue on my hair journey.
What happened
I got extensions sewn in my hair in mid October 2010. I had gotten extensions before with no problems and I though these would be the same. Not so much. I honestly did not feel that my hair was braided or pulled too tightly but apparently it was. Two weeks after I got them done, on Halloween night no less, I was going to wash my hair and was lifting the tracks so I could put shampoo on my scalp and I noticed it was bleeding. I decided not to wash and just take the weave out the next day.
And when I did, oh the horror. There was a 7 inch gash right in the center of a softball sized bald spot. It was truly, truly, horrifying. My mom, who took the hair down, said she wanted to cry. And my reaction? Much calmer than one might expect. Really, I didn't cry, curse, or do anything. I figured, the damage (and I mean, this was TRUE damage) had already been done and me having an intense emotional reaction would not bring it back. So just deep breath and move forward.
Two days later, a dermatologist diagnosed with me traction alopecia with scarring. Now this is not to be confused with central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) which is called scarring alopecia. My hair was essentially pulled out from the root (the traction alopecia part of my diagnosis) and there was a scar (with scarring part) from that. My hair still has the possibility to grow back. CCCA on the other hand, is where the follicle is completely killed (scarred) and the hair probably will never grow back.
Anyway, she told me since I was young and had caught it fairly early, the odds of my hair growing back were pretty good. She of course recommended "standard" medical stuff (some biotin and Rogaine), but she gave me some home remedies I could try. Mostly various oil mixtures. She said the main thing was just taking it easy overall and being gentle with my scalp.
It's been about 18 month since this mishap and I now have a permanent bald spot in the middle of my head. Obviously I have learned to live with it and have moved on with my hair journey.
