- (Sep 14, 2011)
- The Rutland-Canadian Railroad built the Island Line in 1899-1900. The railway included 41 miles track, six miles of marble causeways and trestles, and four drawbridges. "Milk Trains" hauled fresh butter and milk from the farms of Grand Isle County to Boston, Albany and New York; cars were cooled with ice removed from the lake in the winter and stored in icehouses through summer. The trains stopped running in 1961 and for two decades the abandoned tracks and marble causeway deteriorated. Then, in the early 1980's, the people of Burlington turned the causeway and some inland portions of the line into a recreational path.
Until recently, the causeway has been a spectacular bike thoroughfare. There was even a bicycle ferry at the northern end, across a 200' gap in the causeway (left when the old rail bridge was dismantled). The record water levels this spring have really mangled the causeway, however, and there's no bike riding over most of it. We found it still worth the effort on foot.
The walk is level, but now circumventing gullies and climbing over slabs of granite and marble is required. We tend to think of marble as a luxury material used to build rich peoples' floors and counter tops; so tramping over six miles of haphazardly tumbled blocks of the stuff--many as large as minivans--is a bit surreal. But what a wealth of fantastic shapes and striking textures! We'll definitely be returning as soon as we're able with the camera. - Album was created 8 months ago and modified 4 months ago

- (Oct 7, 2011)
- This particular set of Dizzette's boots would not be ideally suited to actual snow conditions. However, they're fun for the autumn season before the snow flies...
These images were shot up in Smuggler's Notch, north of Stowe.
Comments are welcomed and encouraged. Whatcha think?

- (Sep 30, 2011)
- Album name pretty much sums this up. We will try to make more visits to the Notch soon, however. All those big boulders and trees, and the natural shielding of any direct sunlight, make for a very cooperative setting...
Comments? You bet, we love 'em!

| | © 2011 JH | - 020 Fetch at the Falls
- (Sep 10, 2011)
- This album encompasses a recent weekend.
Friday: Flip's Big Day. Usually the older of our two Labradors is the one who gets to come inside, go on short road trips, et cetera. She's calmer. But today was all for Flip. He spent most of the morning playing fetch with Mom up at the falls, with lots of hiking before and after with Mom and Dad. Then we wrapped with a picnic down on the lakefront in Burlington. Flip slept well that night!
Saturday: Chilling in Burlington Day. Dizzette and I wandered about downtown and had a late lunch on the docks. There aren't many pictures from the second day because we were pretty much fried by so much fun and sun, I think.

- This seems like as good a place as any for stashing those shots that aren't numerous enough to qualify for their very own album. The camera travels around with us, after all...

- (May 21, 2011)
- Since the world was (tentatively) scheduled to end by suppertime, we decided we'd better get in one more exploratory trip while the weather was cooperating.
