2011-12-22 Hanover HS Holiday Dance
(Dec 22, 2011)
Since 2000 I have been taking pictures of students doing interesting things. I take the pictures and post them for people to see and to download. I have done this as a volunteer—I am not compensated in any way, shape, or form, directly or indirectly for the pictures, for downloads, or for prints.

I was asked to volunteer to take pictures for the Hanover High School Holiday Dance. This assignment is a little bit different: the organizers had some money they wanted to pay. I didn’t want to change my volunteers status, so this is what I suggested: they could donate what they had set aside for a photographer to the Childrens Hospital at Dartmouth. Our 31-year-old daughter, Joanna Grossman Miller, was treated at CHaD for a serious condition. She has participated in all six of the CHaD Half Marathons, and has been a top fundraiser each year. (In 2011, she did the 5K walk with her 5-week-old daughter, who was the youngest participant.) The funds will be donated in support of her for next year’s half marathon.

Joanna works as an administrator at Harvard University. Last year, she drove up after work the night of the dance to help me wrangle the little darlings into cute poses for their pictures. This year she's got that five-month old daughter, so we'll manage without her.

Chelsea Geoffrey, a senior in the photography program at SUNY Plattsburgh, worked with me. It has been my pleasure to work with Chelsea since she was sophomore at Thetford Academy.

PLEASE NOTE: THE ONLY FEEDBACK I GET IS THROUGH E-MAIL OR PERSONAL CONTACTS. Because I am not compensated in any way, shape, or form for this volunteer activity I only get feedback if it is sent to me. I take all these picture for one reason: it pleases me to do so. I take these pictures as a volunteer. It is fun (and encouraging) for me to hear comments about the pictures.

Please ask permission (which I freely give) before using these pictures in publications or on web sites. If you publish any of these pictures, give photo credit to "Dan Grossman."

2011-12-19 Hanover Christmas Mystery
(Dec 18, 2011)
This is a challenging photography situation. No, "challenging" doesn't do the situation justice. This is, year after year, the worst lighting in which I've ever tried to take pictures. The lighting is truly awful. It comes mostly from above (but sometimes from below, as with the angels' candles), the site is big and open, it is a large group, and the group pictures after the performance must be taken in five minutes (I would usually take about 15 minutes) with a huge group of well wishers milling about! This is definitely NOT point-and-shoot!

Because I took pictures without a flash during the performance, what you see is what I got. My camera (one of the best available for low light) was maxed out for no-light situations, so you see the effects of very, very low light. You see a lot of orangish light because that was the color of the bulbs in the chandeliers. Sometimes the chandeliers were the only light the camera got.

PLEASE NOTE: THE ONLY FEEDBACK I GET IS THROUGH E-MAIL OR PERSONAL CONTACTS. Because I am not compensated in any way, shape, or form for this volunteer activity I only get feedback if it is sent to me. If I don't hear from people, I don't know whether it is worth the effort. I spent about 10 hours taking these pictures on Saturday and Sunday and posting them.

I take all these picture for one reason: it pleases me to do so. I take these pictures as a volunteer. It is fun (and encouraging) for me to hear comments about the pictures.

(I started uploading 1,401 pictures just before noon on Monday, and uploading was finished at about 3:00 pm.)

PLEASE NOTE: THE ONLY FEEDBACK I GET IS THROUGH E-MAIL OR PERSONAL CONTACTS. I tried to take a picture of every student who competed in these two races. If I missed some, Doug Austin may have gotten a picture. Check his pictures at http://public.fotki.com/dugaut/

2011-09-24 Ocean State XC Invitational ALL PICS
(Sep 24, 2011)
(All pictures will be uploaded as of 9/26/11 at about 7:00 pm.)

These pictures are in chronological order, from the beginning of the day. You can tell the time at which a picture was taken by clicking on a picture and then clicking on the blue “exif” to the right of the picture.

I tried to take a picture of every student at the finish line. I missed the first 154 students to finish in the Boys Varsity 1 race because I was required to take pictures of the few students who were getting awards for the prior races.

I took these pictures as a volunteer. I am not compensated in any way, shape, or form, directly or indirectly, for taking these pictures or for the printing of them.

The uploaded pictures can now be downloaded directly for free.

I use professional skills and professional equipment for this volunteer activity. The only feedback I get now is by e-mail from people who look at the pictures. Please e-mail me if you order prints or if you download the pictures. If you don't send me feedback, I don't know whether it is worth all the time I spend on this.

For info on ordering prints or downloading, click on "Welcome" at the top of the blue bar to the left. When printing, be sure to deal with cropping because different sizes will crop the pictures differently.

Please ask permission (which I freely give) BEFORE using these pictures in publications or on web sites. If you publish any of these pictures, give photo credit to "Dan Grossman," and send me a copy of the publication or send me a link to the web site.
