- Stanmer Park has been shaped by human activity for 5000 years. Its recorded history goes back to 765 when the village and its lands were given to the South Malling monastery in nearby Lewes by the King of Sussex. Later ownership was transferred to King Henry VIII. It is the former private estate of Thomas Pelham, the first Earl of Chichester. In the early 18th century the Pelham famly bought and landscaped the park and built the stately home Stanmer House in 1722 on the site of an even earlier house. It is now available to hire for weddings and functions.Stanmer church was built in the Middle Ages; records of it go back to 1232. In 1838 the old church was demolished by the third Earl of Chichester and a new one was built on the same sight. It is no longer used as a place of worship but is open to the public every Sunday. The churchyard contains an unusual wellhouse, rebuilt at the same time as the church, with a rare vertically-mounted donkey-wheel dating from the 18th century or possibly earlier.The church and pond opposite Stanmer House create a beautiful park setting. The park and village are open to the public and there is a tea room in Stanmer village. Visitors are asked to please respect the privacy of the residents of the village. Stanmer Estate is now owned by the Brighton Corporation who bought it in 1947. The park makes up part of a nationally important landscape, now designated as the South Downs National Park.

- The Roman Palace at Fishbourne in Sussex was discovered by accident during the digging of a water main trench in 1960. The discovery led to nine seasons of excavations that showed the site had developed from a military base at the time of the Roman invasion in AD43 to a sumptuous Palace by the end of the first century.
