Two Years and Beyond
Same routine of shampoo hair in sections concentrating on the scalp.

Small amount of conditioner only on the older part of the locs (not on the scalp). Rinse well.

Small amount of grapeseed oil rubbed in my hands then on the older loc growth (never on the scalp).

I finally latched my locs after 3 months and they feel great.

Inspiration Locs
(Apr 11, 2006)
I will add photos to this album from time to time when I see locs on others that offer me incentive and inspiration to stay strong on my loc journey.

May 2006
(May 1, 2006)
This is the third month for my locs. I am much more comfortable with them and how they look, even if they do look frizzy/nappy to others.

My Loc Journey March 2006
(Mar 1, 2006)
This is the first full month of having my locs. I have learned a lot about my hair and still read all I can about how others maintain their locs.

When I first started locking, I thought I would like the well-maintained look best, but as I have began my journey and have travelled a little way, I find that I really like the FREEFORM look much better.

I have started finger-latching locs that have lots of growth and will probably continue to use that method about once a month. The reason I find myself latching so much is because my hair has grown about an inch in only one month.

I wash my locs about twice a week and after towel drying, I apply a small amount of aloe vera gel with a few drops of jojoba and a few drops of essential oil.

June 2007 (Month 16)
My locs are starting to grow and get a little heavier.

Routine:
Divide locs into two sections down the middle of my head. Tie one side up with a thick elastic scrunchy.

Wash one section at a time with very diluted (Dr. Bronner's) Castile Soap. Making sure to concentrate on scrubbing the scalp with my fingertips.

Condition after shampoo with LOTS and LOTS of cheap (Suave or Alberto VO5) conditioner. I go thru one bottle in about 3 conditioning sessions.

Apply Oil (whichever is cheapest, I am currently using grapeseed oil) by rubbing a small amount in hands and then applying only to the locs (never on the scalp). I put about one teaspoon of oil in my palm, rub my hands together then apply down the length of one of the four sections of locs I am working with.

Essential Oil apply a few drops to palm rub hands together and apply down length of locs. I do this about four times to make sure to cover all sections of my locs.

I always allow my hair to air dry.

Sometimes every other month or every two months, I latch a section of my locs if I feel they need it, otherwise I let them do their own thing.

January 2008 (Month 23)
Moisture, moisture, moisture!!

That is the word I have learned how to apply to my locs just recently.

My daily moisturizing routine goes as follows:

Equal parts water and Aloe Vera gel: This is in a spray bottle and I lighly spray my hair with this mixture. I gently rub this light mist into my locs. My hands are usually wet from just having taken a shower.

Lavender Hydrosol: http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/fwater/fwater.html
I also (lightly) spray this on my hair and then gently rub it into my locs right after the Aloe Vera mixture has been applied, so my hands are still slightly wet.

Grape seed oil: I pour about a teaspoon (sometimes only half a teaspoon) into the palm of my hand, rub them together, then gently apply this as thoroughly as I can, making sure to concentrate on the ends of my locs where the hair is usually driest.

I cannot express enough the importance of keeping one’s locs moisturized for maximum loc health.

December 2006 (Month 10)
My locs are always changing now and as such seem to require different care routines from wash to wash.

This month I am washing with Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (liquid) Eucalyptus scented. I only wash one side of my head at a time in order to have greater control with srubbing (only) the scalp to remove flakes from natural scalp oil.

I then condition with the absolute cheapest conditioner I can find in the store which is usually either Sauve or Alberto VO5.

After I rinse the conditioner out, I apply a small amount of oil to my locs (not on the scalp) while the locs are still dripping wet in the shower.

I towel blot my locs dry which means that I hold the towel in my hand and gather a small handful of locs in the towel and squeeze them. I do this until the locs are not dripping anymore. This can take awhile so I am usually doing other things and will return often to do more blotting until my locs finally stop dripping for good.
