Farm Animals
Here are pictures of various creatures that have invaded our territory and allowed us to take pictures of them. Rabbits, snakes, a giant moth, a baby bird, a bat and a frog are on the list. Ground squirrels, so far, have evaded being captured on film.

Flowers & Weeds
(Jan 1, 2006)
Our first flowers came up at the very end of February. Of course, they were wild crocuses. (We never saw early snowdrops emerge.) Next came the grape hyacinths. Turnip flowers followed soon thereafter. In the meantime noxious weeds were starting to take over... "So, what is a weed?" I wondered. Some of them weeds are mighty pretty, you know! I got very curious, studied up and put together this web page of pictures of Colorado Weeds at http://Weeds.HotMeal.Net for your enjoyment and knowledge. Oh, and if you are curious about the domain name, well many of the weeds are actually quite edible. A salad of Russian thistle, Prickly lettuce, and Dandelion leaves may not sound so good, but apparently it is! So, please look forward to finding information on the edible weeds coming to http://Weeds.HotMeal.Net soon.

Bad Roofer
(Oct 11, 2007)
Major Contract Violations/Issues by Aces Roofing Inc. of Watkins, CO:
The contractor misrepresented his contractor registration status (his last registration expired over 10 years ago) with Adams Co and never pulled a permit. Upon learning this, I pulled the permit myself. (Exhibit A)
Brought a trailer half-filled with trash and stored it on my driveway. My request to get it off my driveway was met with “I have no other place to put it, other than perhaps your back yard. But don’t worry, I will not overfill it the way we did the first one, so your cement will not suffer damage.” More debris was added over the next couple of days, but the trailer remained on my driveway for several more days after all tear off work had already seized. The trailer was filled to the rim, despite promises to the contrary. Promised every day to take it away “tomorrow,” but “tomorrow” only came more than a week later. The trash I had sitting in front of the house, which the Contractor promised in the contract to haul away was left behind. In fact more was added to it. (Exhibit B1 and B2)
The work site was never cleaned up, debris, cigarette buts, nails and other sharp objects were left behind. One of the employees told me that they no longer had the magnet. Every day I picked up after the workers, collecting nails and shingles all around the house. One of the latest “crops” was gathered without use of magnets or special tools on 10/7. (Exhibit C)
Front porch bow was not properly corrected. In place of the slight bow 1” over 12’, there are now multiple valleys and ridges, none of which where there before. I mentioned to the foreman this before they started shingling, but he said it was done with a chalk line and is perfectly straight. I repeated that there was an obvious problem after some shingles were already placed in the area, but my complaint was ignored. Contractor attempted to fix this problem afterwards by adding shingles underneath promising to make it look absolutely even once he was done. After 4 attempts by the foreman to add and remove shingles in that area, it only looks worse and shingles there have been abused in the process. (Exhibit D)
Broke a piece of the trim in the rear of the house and attempted to reattach the broken piece with caulk. This trim piece must be remade. (Exhibit E)
The contract called for reattaching all lose fascia boards, as required. This was not properly done and a large gap was created through which insects can easily get in to nest. (Exhibit F1 and F2)
Installed top of fascia ½” higher than the deck level – this is a major problem for at least two reasons: 1. This reduces roof’s resistance to wind, which was a major reason for upgrading to much more expensive shingles in the first place and 2. This creates a pocket for moisture to gather in the area between the top of the fascia and the decking, especially because 1” x 2” metal was used, instead of the shingle manufacturer specified 2” x 2” metal. The contractor attempted to remedy the cosmetics of this situation by “feathering out” (adding shingles under the ones at the edge of the roof to make an appearance of a smaller transition). This does not solve either of the problems but makes the problem more difficult to see. In addition used screws of wrong type were used for attaching the fascia.
Broke one of the new fascia boards during reinstallation and did not properly fix it. (Exhibit G)
Nailed lightning rod wires on the side of the roof, instead of screwing them into the new fascia board, as I had requested and which method was used prior to the contractor replacing those fascia boards. This installation method is not approved by the manufacturer and violates local building code, as it causes face nailing of the shingles.
Installed one of the soffit vents crooked, outside the house wall perimeter and under the downspout. This is not proper installation; it does not allow for proper venting of the attic and may allow excessive moisture to enter through this vent.
Did not pick up and deliver the trim, as was agreed to in the contract.
Marked locations and prepared to install, but never completed the installation of sky tubes. (Installation of the second sky tube along with the cost of $75 was added to the contract within a week after the original contract was signed.) (Exhibit H1 and H2)
Used the wrong caulk (Alexis Plus) – not what was specified in the contract (elastometric).
Did not electrically connect attic fans.
Did no work at all on the second building.
Destroyed my lawn grass, peonies and many other flowers. (Exhibit I)
Created a nightmare for me and major problems for everyone else that needed to work on the house by never following the agreed upon schedule. The painter and the gutter installer had to come out extra times. Internet provider had to reschedule twice. All other projects inside the house had to be put on hold and delayed, greenhouse plans were destroyed completely. I could not do any of my own work while attempting to mitigate and manage this disaster. My almost six month pregnant wife had a nervous breakdown as a result of all this…

Bad Contractor - Dmitry Gromyko - Denver, CO
(Mar 8, 2007)
Dmitry Gromyko, who works in the greater Denver metro area, performed several handyman/contractor jobs for us around the house. Quality of his work is highly questionable and he refuses to stand behind the work that he does. (Unfortunately, Colorado does not require registration for general contractors.)

Here is the list of the larger problems:
1. Deck and handles are about 6 inches off the foundation.
2. None of the fence gates open.
3. Grout on the bathroom tile job cracked and w/ pinholes.

Pictures in this album illustrate the job that was completed by Dmitry Gromyko on 12/21/06. The job was paid for by check on the following day. Dmitry did not clean up after the job and due to the holidays, we were unable to inspect his work until a couple of weeks later.

When I contacted Dmitry Gromyko in the first part of January to take care of the problem, he said that he will come out to take a look at what has to be done and that he will let me know the following week, when that would be. Three weeks later, he still had not called back. I called him again and told him in no uncertain terms that he must do it before the coming weekend and he promised to show up on Thursday, February 8th. He also asked that I mark problem spots. At 12:30 at night on February 8th, Dmitry Gromyko emailed me to let say that he would not be able to make it on that day and that he would follow up to say when he would. As of today, March 9th, I still have not heard back from Dmitry Gromyko.

This album was created to document Dmitry Gromyko’s poor workmanship. It will initially document only the tile grouting work that he did in my bathroom. Close inspection revealed a deluge of problem spots (both pinholes and cracks). Tape markings indicate the larger more obvious problem spots. Both an overall view and problem details are illustrated. According to experts in the field, these are obviously the result of improper grout mixture. (Dmitry Gromyko used to much water). It is also possible that in several places insufficient force was used to press the grout all the way to the substrate. From the pictures it is obvious that the work must be completely redone.

A link to this album will be emailed to Dmitry imminently. Should he choose to ignore this issue further and not show up to take care of the problem fully and to my ultimate satisfaction within the next 4 days, I will hire another contractor to take care of this problem and send Dmitry the bill. Should the bill not be taken care of within 7 days of being emailed to him or refused prior to that date, I will send out an email with the link to this album to a large number of other Russian-speakers in the Denver area on Baraban.Com email lists. Should Dmitry Gromyko continue to refuse to pay this bill, complaints will be filed with the state of Colorado Attorney General and a local Better Business Office. In addition, a small claims lawsuit will be filed. Other measures will also be taken, as appropriate.

I am determined to make sure that Dmitry Gromyko mends his ways or gets no business in the market he currently serves!

Chekhov International Theatre Festival
(Dec 7, 2006)
Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Featuring famous Russian movie stars: Alexander Feklistov, Dmitry Djuzhev, and Mikhail Zhigalov and etc. Declan Donnellan, director. Nick Ormerod, designer. "Home in on the exquisitely articulate body language of these Russian actors, on their remarkable vocal beauty and physical grace, and on the sublimely subtle 'choreography'of Donnellan's staging." — Chicago Tribune. British theater director Declan Donnellan has taken the world by storm with his multi-Olivier Award-winning productions and, with designer Nick Ormerod, is co-founder of the United Kingdom's celebrated Cheek by Jowl company. In this international hit production Donnellan serves up classic Shakespeare with an icy-cold shot of vodka. His remarkable all-male Russian cast—featuring Alexander Feklistov, Dmitry Djuzhev, and Mikhail Zhigalov, superstars of Russian stage, television, and cinema— enlivens Shakespeare's tale of mistaken identity, separated twins, and gender-crossing disguises in one of the most physical, hilarious, and powerful productions of Twelfth Night ever. Performed in Russian with English surtitles. See: http://www.baraban.com/news/sf/more.php?uid=844
