| | | - KKOA 2009 Salina Kansas Leadsled and Model Contest
- (Jul 24, 2009)
- On July 24, 25, and 26, the Kustom Kemps of America staged their 29th Annual Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas. It was the biggest ever, setting a new record for 1:1 entries of 1,025 great customs and rods. More vendors and pinstripers than ever and, of course, many of the customizing legends and greats were there in force. George Barris, Darryl Starbird, Bill Hines, Chuck Miller, Brad Masterson, Fritz Schenck, Mark Moriarity, and Bo Huff just to name a few!
The weather varied between hot and cool but it rained a bit and it was always muggy and humid! Hey, it's central Kansas in July! Whadya' expect???
The Hollywood star this year was Joyce DeWitt ("Janet") from the Three's Company television situation comedy. What a treat she was and she's just as bubbly and upbeat as the characters she plays on TV!
Rockabilly legend Charlie Gracie performed. Charlie played and hung with Richie Valens, Chuck Berry, and all the other greats "back in the day"! A dead-on Johnny Cash impersonator rounded out the musical side of the live entertainment. There was a great DJ there and he kept the air full of oldies and goldies.
The KC Slammers were again proud to stage the model car contest for the KKOA. A great opportunity to showcase the art of model-car building for all to enjoy!
If you've never been to this event, you just have to make it NEXT year "fer shure" because the last weekend of July in 2010 will be the 30th Anniversary for the Leadsled Spectacular. It promises to be the biggest and best ever! See ya' there!

| | | - 2009 Starbird Museum Hall of Fame Induction and Car Show
- (May 11, 2009)
- Rich Newberry, a member of the KC Slammers, made the trip down to Darryl Starbird's National Custom and Hot Rod Hall of Fame and Museum. He had the opportunity to attend the annual Hall of Fame Induction, car show, and spent a lot of time at the museum. He also got to go to the cookout at the Starbird Home on the grounds. Lots of big names in the customizing world were there! Our friend, Jerry Titus, received the LIfetime Achievement Award for his contributions on perpetuating rods and customs through the KKOA. Jerry is the president of the Kustom Kemps of America.
Lots of neat pictures to enjoy in this album! - 295 photo(s) (828 MB)

| | | - Heartland Model Car Nationals 2009
- (Jun 14, 2009)
- The KC Slammer's 18th Annual Heartland Model Car Nationals was held the weekend of June 13 and 14, 2009. It was again at the beautiful Overland Park Convention Center in the Kansas City Metro area. The model count was down a bit this year - most likely due to the economy but the quality of what was entered was perhaps the best ever.
Our special guest this year was none other than Jimmy Flintstone "The Resin King". Jimmy drove down all the way from his home in Wisconsin and brought a whole van-load of his resin goodies for sale. Of course, he was presented the ceremonial "Honored Guest Chair" with custom upholstery by Judy Hardister and custom painting and striping by local artist Hot Rod Huey.
All the pics are on here now. We're still going to try to put the right recipient's picture after each award but we'll get that later! We didn't quite get everybody but we got a lot of pictures of some smiling faces - 628 photo(s) (606 MB)

| | | - GSL 2009
- (Apr 23, 2009)
- Two KC Slammers, Bill Barker and Allen Smerchek, went to the 17th International GSL in Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 23-25. They had a blast and here are 467 pictures to prove it. They both say though that the greatest treat, beyond seeing all the great models, was getting to meet and greet all their fellow modelers from around the country and world.
The event is only held every other year so the next one is set for April, 2011. Maybe these pics will whet your appetite top make the trip then! - 467 photo(s) (265 MB)
