- (Aug 31, 2004)
- The DAVIS MILITARY TRANSPORTATION COMPANY (*) was formed to purchase and restore the Davis Motorcar Company vehicle #494X1, located in 2004 in Georgia.
As of January, 2005, the new owners Daniel Boehm, William Miller, Bruce Feuerstein, and Thomas Wilson are making plans to restore the vehicle.
UPDATE NOTE ON OWNERSHIP: In 2006, Tom Wilson bought out the interests of Dan Boehm, and Bruce Feuerstein bought out the interests of Bill Miller, thus The DAVIS MILITARY TRANSPORTAION COMPANY NOW CONSISTS OF BRUCE FEUERSTEIN, OF BELDING, MICHIGAN AND TOM WILSON, OF YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN.
We post these pictures here for the enjoyment of the general public and the Davis community. Update as of February 17, 2005: The team has established that the Kaiser-Frazer "Supersonic" Henry J. four-cylinder engine found in the Davis Military 494X is in good operating condition. The engine is fitted with a 12-volt coil and alternator, but otherwise is all six-volt. So it must be started and run with a 12-volt battery (borrowed from our 1967 Ambassador convertible!) The engine has been run now for perhaps 20-30 minutes total, and oil pressure varies from 20 to 40 psi, and the engine does not miss. Dan and Tom have started cutting off the non-original handrail pipes and seating supports in the rear.
Fred LaPerriere, owner of Davis military #494X2, in Colorado had graciously volunteered to provide all necessary photos and technical advice for the retoration of the portions of the vehicle that the Macon, Georgia shriner's group modified.
Dan got busy pulling out old wiring, and the taillights and some guages have been removed, along with the seats. Penetrating gunk has been applied to every fastener on the car that we could see or reach, but some of these fasteners are just going to have to be ground, torched, or sawed off.
Tonight (Feb 17, '05) we will upload some of the detail pictures that we shot for restoration reference. Last Saturday we received a call from Mr. Leanard Conrad, the day-shift test driver at Aberdeen, Maryland proving grounds, where the Davis Military was tested and the movie was made of the tests that is included in the VHS and DVDs that the Dais Registry sells. Conrad, 84, says he is the only living member of the staff from the period when the Davises were tested by the defense department for possible purchase. A later letter this week stated that, contrary to Conrad's earlier recollection, the driver that wrecked the Davis is not still around. We are hoping for a visit soon from Bruce, who has not yet seen the vehicle, and who will be in charge of the restoration of the Davis' special trailer. - - - -
UPDATE, OCTOBER 20, 2006: Work is proceeding on the body. Today the pattern for the left front side panel and the upper left cowl patch repair went to the metal fabricators in Belleville, Michigan. Work continued on pattern making for the windshield base body brackets, as well as removal from the body of ALL bolted and screw-fastened brackets and other fitting on the body. Trimming of additional lacy-rusty metal sections has begun, in preparation for send work to the media-blasting shop. Other loose parts will be gathered and inventoried for media blasting, prior to chassis-compoment disassembly. tjw. --

| | | - SKOUT PROJECT
- (May 7, 2009)
- The SKOUT project. -- In the late 1980, my two sons, Wes and Warren, abandoned a 1970 International Scout sport utility vehicle that had been given to them by my first wife's second husband. (He received it new, as a graduation gift from his parents, I believe, and drove it a few years, until it became pretty rusty, and gave it to my boys. After towing it back to Michigan from North Carolina, they drove it around Ann Arbor for a few years, then eventually abandoned it on the April Farm, on Bridgewater Road, west of Saline, Michigan - (Warren was a friend of son of the owner of the farm.) I felt sorry for the old IHC Scout, and in 1988 decided its engine and chassis were worth saving, though the body was rusted beyond hope. I still have pictures of the original Scout, regular print photos, in an album at home. I purchased a dirt-plain 1951 Kaiser Special four-door sedan from Mike Barker of KFOC, towbarred it home, and proceeded with surgery to "blend" the two vehiclesl. I worked on this project for about two years I cut the Kaiser in half behind the "B": post, joined the front portion at the B post to the rear fender and trunk portion, and mounted that on the Scout chassis, after removing badly-rusted body, which was only held in place by the electrical wires to the lights and the s\ingle body/chassis mount under the radiator. But then I became involved in a second Davis restoration project....then the AMP car restoration, then the Davis Military vehicle restoration,.... Now, 21 years later, I am going to start again on the SKOUT project. Now that I have the Oakwood, Ohio '48 Kaiser running and the body work shaping up, I am going to suspend operations on that and finish the SKout !

| | | - AMERICAN METAL PRODUCTS (AMP) CAR PROJECT
- (Jul 23, 2001)
- A photo album of the life and resurrection of the American Metal Products car, (or AMP CAR), built and submitted to Kaiser-Frazer in 1948, which resulted in the design and production of Kaiser's "Henry J" model. Why not learn more about Henry J. cars and the Kaiser-Frazer Owner's club? go to: http://members.tripod.com/~ben1937/kfoci.htm tw....... Update, October 22, 2005: Final painting has begun...go to last page! Update, Nov. 14, 2005 = All of the panels are painted, albeit with some really bad runs on the fenders and doors, likely due to inadequate lighting and zealous carelessness on the part of the AMPster "director." Further sanding is being done on the two rear fenders, the worst panels, and they are almost ready to be reprimed and painted again. VALUABLE LESSON: Don't try to paint more than about two panels at a time - (but have another one prepped and ready to paint in case I have too much paint left in the gun - this stuff has a short "pot life!" tjw.....CHATROOM FOR THIS PROJECT IS: - -- (Because of an insideous recurring spam advertisement, the chatroom for this site has been changed to ; http://www.theautochannel.com/cgi/chatengine?chatname=bigrigs&Submit=Go+there%21&frame=frameset ).. - June 2, 2006, Except for interior wall and door upholstery and headliner, and some horn switch troubleshooting and a few other minor details, the AMP car is done today. Further work will have to be done at a later time, as time, parts, and finances become available. It has been seven long years, and many other projects await my attention. Thanks for visiting the AMP Car Project site!!
